Understanding canine communication

Although dogs are innocent speechless creatures, however, they still do communicate non-verbally through their body language. By having a deep understanding of their body movements & gestures, one can easily get to know about what his furry companion is trying to tell him. It may take a while to completely understand what a dog is trying to communicate as their anatomy is not the same as of humans so you need to observe his behavior carefully to understand his emotions.

Apart from body movements, dogs also communicate through vocalization. We all are aware of the fact that dogs are somehow related to the wolfs which is why both of them communicate similarly using visual & vocal communication. From barking, growling to sniffing and tail positioning, dogs can communicate in various ways.

Dogs are highly responsive to the things happening around them and also to humans cue. To avoid any behavioral issues, it becomes essential to socialize the dog from an early age as it will help you in better understanding your dog’s behavior and communication.

We’ve rounded some ways with which your dog communicates with you:

Visual Communication

  • Eye contact: As they say eyes are the window to the soul, the dog can express their thoughts through their eyes. When a dog makes constant eye contact then it implies that he really trust you & is comfortable with you. Whereas if a dog avoids making eye contact then it simply implies that he doesn’t like or not comfortable around you.
  • Bares his belly: Another way of communicating is belly exposure. If a dog rolls over baring his belly then it suggests that he is showing passive resistance to a perceived threat.
  • Tail movement: Tail movement is one of the most common ways a dog communicates. However, people need to understand that every tail movement doesn’t signify joy. For instance, if a dog way his tail slowly then it implies that he is feeling cautious whereas if he wags tail vigorously then it implies that he is happy to see you. And, if you notice your dog running after his tail which makes you wonder why do dogs chase their tail then it indicates your dog’s OCD and not his normal visual communication.
  • Raising a paw: Another common way dog communicates is by raising a paw. When a dog wants to seek your attention then he raises his paw and touches you. Generally, this way of communication is used by puppies or young dogs.

Vocal Communication

  • Whining: Whining is a common way of vocal communication in dogs. Dogs whine to get attention from their owners. Mostly puppies whine so that their owners offer them some comfort.
  • Barking: One of the most common ways of canine communication is barking. A dog barks to report his emotional state. Dogs bark for a number of reasons like when he has pain or wants to threaten someone or wants attention, etc.
  • Growling: Another way a dog communicates is by growling. A dog growls when he wants to threaten someone. Sometimes, due to improper behavioral training, dogs tend to growl to display dominance.

Final Thoughts

Canine communication is all about body postures & gestures with which one can easily understand the mental state of a dog. By having a proper understanding of your pooch’s language, you can maximize his happiness.
